Don’t get me wrong. I haven’t got shares in YuleCo, and I can’t afford a one-day end-user licence, so I couldn’t have a legal party. I’d briefly considered buying from one of the budget competitors like XmasTym, or a spinoff from a non-specialist like Coca-Crissmas, but the idea of doing it on the cheap was just depressing. I wouldn’t have been able to use much of the traditional stuff, and if you can’t have all of it, why have any? (XmasTym had the rights to Egg Nog. But Egg Nog’s disgusting.) Those other firms keep trying to create their own alternatives to proprietary classics like reindeer and snowmen, but they never take off. I’ll never forget Annie’s underwhelmed response to the JingleMas Holiday Gecko.

Karriärmanifest

gapingvoid har ett läsvärt karriärmanifest uppe. De tre första punkterna:

1. Unless you’re working in a coal mine, an emergency ward, or their equivalent, spare us the sad stories about your tough job. The biggest risk most of us face in the course of a day is a paper cut.

2. Yes, your boss is an idiot at times. So what? (Do you think your associates sit around and marvel at your deep thoughts?) If you cannot give your boss basic loyalty, either report the weasel to the proper authorities or be gone.

3. You are paid to take meaningful actions, not superficial ones. Don’t brag about that memo you sent out or how hard you work. Tell us what you achieved.

Stranger than Ficciones

I novellen La Secta de los Treinta (De trettios sekt) skriver Borges om en heretisk sekt som ser Judas som frälsare: hans förräderi var nödvändigt för att Jesus skulle korsfästas och därigenom bli martyr.

En typisk Borges-text alltså, med de närmast obligatoriska spegelvändningarna, påhittad litteratur och förräderi som grundbultar.

Nu visar det sig dock att det existerar ett Evangelium enligt Judas:

In the key passage Jesus tells Judas, ”‘you will exceed all of them. For you will sacrifice the man that clothes me.'”

Kasser, the translation-project leader, offers an interpretation: ”Jesus says it is necessary for someone to free him finally from his human body, and he prefers that this liberation be done by a friend rather than by an enemy.

Mångförslagna politiker och demokrati

And as a red rag to any bull, I’d have to say I’d rather be judged as a poet (which I am not) by Stalin than by any PoMo Lit Crit Gender Studies partyliner. Stalin seems genuinely to have recognized the merit of good poetry; he had no compunction about Gulaging or shooting hack poets who obeyed what they thought was the party line. But I digress. Still, it’s a footnote in a footnote.

En fundering utifrån detta citat är om det finns en korrelation mellan hur odemokratiskt ett land är och hur många talanger Ledaren anses ha. Förutom att vara politisk ledare var Stalin musikkritiker, militärstrateg, ideolog/vetenskapsman (samma sak i Sovjetunionen), expert på att effektivisera fabriksproduktion och jordbruk och besatt förmodligen också oräkneliga andra talanger.

Samma mönster kan ses om vi jämför Kim Jong Il med Fredrik Reinfelt (ledare för världens minst respektive mest demokratiska land om vi ska tro på Economist): den ena är lysande militär, har skrivit hundratals böcker i de mest skiftande vetenskaper (som mitt exemplar av On the art of the cinema visar), skriver operor, flyger jetplan och är förmodligen världens främsta golfspelare.

Den andre beröms mest för att han inte är Göran Persson, en egenskap han delar med de flesta.

Skulle det alltså vara möjligt att mäta ett lands demokratiska hälsa genom att granska vilka och hur många egenskaper som tillskrivs Ledaren?

Nietzsche vs Family Circus

 Vad får man om man kombinerar en av de där typiskt småtråkiga amerikanska dagsserierna med slumpmässiga Nietzsche-citat? The Nietzsche Family Circus.

Upphovsrätt för tid och evighet?

Storbritannien har gjort en utredning om upphovsrätt och resultatet är nu här i form av Gowers review of intellectual property. Positivt nog föreslår Gower att skyddstiderna inte ska förlängas från 50 till 95 år som föreslagits, och att eventuella förlängningar, om sådana kommer till stånd, inte ska tillämpas retroaktivt.
Ytterligare ett positivt tecken är att Gordon Brown enligt Music Thing ställer sig positiv till ”transformative works”: mashups, bootlegs och liknande lånbaserade verk. Nu får man hoppas att svenska och europeiska lagstiftare kommer till liknande slutsatser.
På ytan kan längre skyddstider låta rimligt, för vem vill beröva våra främsta konstnärer deras inkomster? Lawrence Lessig har skrivit åtskilligt om detta, och kortfattat finns två problem med långa skyddstider:

1. De flesta konstverk tjänar pengar på kort sikt, så skyddstider på 95 istället för 50 är begränsade som incitament att skapa mer konst. (För att inte tala om förlängda skyddstider efter konstnärens död.)
2. Automatiska förlängningar gör att de 95-99% av verken som inte fortsätter säljas på marknaden hålls undan allmänheten. Ett bolag som Disney visar vilken grogrund för bearbetningar och vidaretolkningar som kan finnas i en bred kulturell allmänning. Det undermineras med längre skyddstider, och redan idag finns det filmer och musik som bokstavligen ruttnar bort i arkiven eftersom det är omöjligt att få tag på upphovsmannen för en återutgåva.

Lessig skriver mer utförligt om detta i en artikel i Financial Times:

Yet while the incentives produced by term extension are tiny, the costs are huge. The vast majority of 50-year-old recordings have no commercial value. That means many of these recordings are ”orphans” – works whose owners cannot even be identified. Extending the term for these works will simply guarantee they remain orphans. For another 45 years, libraries and archives would be forbidden from making these forgotten works accessible, because they cannot clear the rights to them.

Men när till och med de döda ställer sig bakom längre skyddstider kan man undra om man har rätt?

Wired har en artikel om Brenda Hutchinson, som gör musik genom att sjunga i ett 3 meter långt rör. Röret gör att vissa frekvenser släcks ut och andra förstärks. Resultatet blir delvis kaotiskt, där vissa toner helt försvinner och andra förvandlas till oigenkännlighet.
Jag har svårt att ogilla en artist som döper en låt till ”The Star Strangled Banner”.

Alltid intressanta BLDGBLOG har en lång intervju med fotografen Simon Norfolk. Norfolk är en landskapsfotograf som fotograferat superdatorer, krigsplatser, spionanläggningar och annat fördolt i det moderna samhällets geografi.

Som Norfolk själv påpekar finns det nästan religiösa övertoner i dessa bilder:

 Where weapons and supercomputers fit in for me is in a military-industrial complex. The problem is that that complex has drifted off so far above any idea of democratic control – even Eisenhower pointed this out – that I would call it godlike. It’s beyond irrational, it’s beyond any kind of comprehension in a scientific sense.

It ends up being like a relationship with the sublime – a military sublime. All of the work I’m doing, I might even call it: ”Toward a Military Sublime.” Because these objects are beyond: they’re inscrutable, uncontrollable, beyond democracy.

 Islam and Christianity are so similar that they are almost, but not quite, the same religion. They’re both monotheistic, with all the cultural implications this carries.
